Day 1

Our journey began at Suvarnabhumi Airport, as the only airline offering direct flights to Sukhothai Province is Bangkok Airways, with three daily departures. The flights land at Sukhothai Airport, which is located just 30 kilometers from the city center.

The Bangkok Airways check-in counters are located in Row F. There are a significant number of counters available, resulting in minimal wait times. Additionally, passengers have the option to check in early through various channels, including the airline's website, mobile app, or self-service kiosks.

Bangkok Airways generously supported our trip and provided access to the Blue Ribbon Lounge, a business-class lounge for domestic passengers.

After checking in, we wasted no time in heading straight to the Blue Ribbon Lounge, located on the second floor of the A Concourse, opposite Gate A3. Are you ready? Let's explore!

The interior is decorated in a simple and elegant style, with warm lighting that creates a relaxing atmosphere.

Upon arrival, the staff warmly welcomed us and presented an extensive menu featuring both Thai and Western cuisine.

In addition, there are other snacks and treats available for you to choose from and enjoy at your leisure.

A must-try and famous local dish is "Khao Tom Mud" (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves).

Amenities in the lounge include Wi-Fi, computers, newspapers, and magazines.

A variety of seating options are available for relaxation and dining, including comfortable chairs and plush sofas.

Soon, the hot food was served at the table.

Pan-fried sea bass with pineapple sauce, served with brown rice and jasmine rice. Looks delicious, doesn't it? It tastes great too.

We opted for flight PG-209, departing at 13:10. Boarding time is 12:35. It is advisable to arrive slightly earlier, as a bus transfer is required to reach the aircraft at the parking apron.

The ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft used on the Bangkok-Sukhothai route is a compact aircraft, but the interior is surprisingly spacious, allowing passengers to fully extend their legs. Despite initial concerns about potential dizziness, the flight experience was comparable to that of larger aircraft.

The in-flight meal, a delectable "Shrimp in Coconut Curry Noodles," tantalized the taste buds with its soft, silky noodles bathed in a fragrant, rich coconut curry sauce. The accompanying dessert, a creamy purple yam and coconut custard, provided a sweet and satisfying conclusion to the culinary journey.

Take your lover to see the sacred heart-shaped land

The highlight of flying into Sukhothai Airport is the aerial view of the heart-shaped sacred land in the middle of Thung Talay Luang, a royal initiative monkey cheek project to solve the flooding and drought problems of Sukhothai province. It is recommended to choose a seat on the left side when departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

It took only 1 hour and 15 minutes to safely arrive at Sukhothai Airport. The captain landed very smoothly, which was a pleasant experience.

Taking your partner on a tram ride at the airport

Upon disembarking from the plane, passengers will need to transfer to a charming, small tram that will take them to the arrivals terminal, located a short distance away.

The baggage claim area is refreshingly simple, with no conveyor belts. Instead, there is a designated area where recently unloaded bags are placed. This streamlined approach ensures a quick and convenient baggage retrieval process.

After receiving the bag, I went to find Mr. Nueng, the owner of Arunotai Rent-a-Car, who came to deliver the car we rented himself. This company has a wide variety of cars to choose from and can pick up the car at both Sukhothai and Phitsanulok airports. The service is friendly and the price is reasonable. After picking up the car, we intended to visit the airport zoo next door, but it was closed for renovations during our visit. Instead, we could only peek at the deer from afar through the fence outside.

Take your partner on a tour of an organic farm project

About 1.5 kilometers from the airport, you will find the Sukhothai Airport Organic Agriculture Project on your left. This project serves as a learning center for organic farming, open to anyone interested in learning and experiencing organic farming firsthand. Additionally, there is a health-conscious restaurant and a souvenir shop offering organic products such as organic fragrant rice, fresh vegetables, and healthy beverages.

Taking your girlfriend for a stroll through the middle-of-the-field market

The Central Market is a new zone that will soon open as a small market for you to choose from food and souvenirs.

Taking Your Partner to Find Mr. Sam

We cut through the middle of the market, passing by the resting area for the buffaloes that have been redeemed from the slaughterhouse. However, there may not be many here, as most are allowed to roam freely in the fields in search of food.

This group is a herd of water buffaloes that have been wallowing in a mud pit, making their bodies filthy.

This handsome water buffalo, named Mr. Sam, is the star of the organic farming project.

Normally, Sam is friendly and allows people to ride on his back. However, we arrived in the afternoon when the weather was hot, and Sam was a bit irritable. Therefore, the staff advised against riding him at this time. It is recommended to visit in the morning for a better experience.

Then let's ride this one instead, your twin brother Sam.

A Romantic Getaway at The Legendha Sukhothai Resort

After visiting the organic farm project at Sukhothai Airport, we drove to our accommodation in the old city, which is about 40 kilometers away from the airport. It took only 30 minutes to reach The Legendha Sukhothai Resort, a boutique resort that emphasizes the contemporary Thai village style. Our accommodation for the first night, located right on the main road and only 1.4 kilometers from Sukhothai Historical Park.

The room we stayed in was a Deluxe room with breakfast and dinner included. The exterior was a traditional teakwood Thai house, while the interior was decorated in a contemporary Thai style. The floor was covered with wood-patterned tiles, and the high ceiling gave a feeling of spaciousness and airiness. The room was clean and free of musty smells, as it had recently been renovated.

The bed is very wide and soft.

We walked to the back of the resort to visit Wat Chang Lom. Near the exit, resort staff were stringing jasmine flowers and playing music to create a traditional Thai atmosphere.

Visiting Wat Chang Lom with Your Partner

Wat Chang Lom is situated behind the resort, separated only by a small road.

"Wat Chang Lom" is located outside the eastern wall of Sukhothai city. The main stupa is a Sri Lankan-style stupa with a round bell-shaped chamber. The base of the stupa is decorated with stucco sculptures of 32 half-elephant figures standing to support the base of the stupa all around.

The inscription found at this temple, known as the 106th inscription, recounts events from the early 20th Buddhist century. It tells the story of "Phor Saidaam, husband of Maenam Thet," a loyal official of King Maha Thammaracha Lithai. Driven by his devotion, Phor Saidaam ordained as a monk following the king's example. In 1933 CE, he dedicated his land to the construction of a vihara, Buddha statues, a Tripitaka library, and the planting of a sacred Bodhi tree. These acts were performed as an offering of merit to the late King Maha Thammaracha Lithai and his deceased queen.

As the sun began to set, we took a leisurely stroll around the resort before heading to dinner.

A small river runs through the center of the resort, with a suspension bridge allowing guests to cross to the other side.

The other side of the bridge is a zone dedicated to traditional Thai wedding ceremonies. The left side houses the ceremony hall, while the right side houses the banquet hall.

Next to the wedding zone is the resort's kitchen, with a replica of an old-fashioned kitchen on display at the front.

This picturesque corner is located behind the stage where Sukhothai's cultural performances are held.

Sukhothai cultural performances are typically held in the evenings during dinner, but they were temporarily suspended during our visit.

The dining room is located at the front of the resort.

A wide variety of dishes are available, along with desserts and fruits.

There is a Pad Thai stall where the chef will stir-fry fresh and hot for you.

After dinner, the staff will present each guest with a jasmine garland adorned with a woven silver barb as a souvenir.

Before leaving, we took a few more photos to capture the atmosphere around the resort.

The surrounding atmosphere is very shady, with small and large trees scattered throughout the area.

Each teakwood Thai house is adorned with various local ornaments, adding vibrancy and life to the space. These embellishments create an authentic atmosphere, transporting visitors back to a traditional Thai village.

Visit Sukhothai Historical Park with your partner

The first destination of the day is Sukhothai Historical Park, which encompasses the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Sukhothai. This city served as the administrative center of the Sukhothai Kingdom, which held sway over the lower northern region of Thailand during the 18th and 19th centuries of the Buddhist era.

Open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Admission for Thai citizens is normally 20 baht, and 40 baht for foreigners. However, the Fine Arts Department has announced that admission is free from now until January 31, 2017.

Visitors who wish to enter the park by car will be charged a fee of 50 baht per vehicle. Alternatively, those who have not rented a car can rent a bicycle or use a motorbike taxi service from The Legendha Hotel. This is a very convenient option.

Our first stop was Wat Mahathat, a large temple located in the center of the city. Built during the reign of King Sri Indraditya, it houses various stupas, including 200 chedis. It is considered a significant temple of the Sukhothai Kingdom.

The main stupa is a Sukhothai-style stupa with a lotus bud shape.

Surrounded by eight pagodas on a single base, namely the laterite prang located at the four cardinal directions and the Srivijaya-style pagodas mixed with Langka made of bricks at the corners.

On the eastern side of the main stupa, there is a large hall built of laterite. It has a platform that once housed the largest bronze Buddha statue in Thailand, the Phra Si Sakyamuni. This statue has since been moved to Wat Suthat in Bangkok.

The second point of interest is Wat Si Swai, located approximately 350 meters southwest of Wat Mahathat.

The ancient site is located within a walled enclosure and consists of three prangs in the Lopburi style. The prangs are relatively slender and sit on low bases. Some of the stucco decorations resemble patterns found on Chinese Yuan dynasty ceramics.

A lintel carved with the image of Vishnu reclining on the cosmic serpent, along with fragments of statues and a Shiva lingam, indicate that the site was once a Hindu temple. Later, a vihara was added to the front, transforming it into a Buddhist sanctuary. Finally, it became a Buddhist temple.

The next point of interest is Wat Sa Si, located northwest of Wat Mahathat. This ancient site is situated in the middle of a large pond called Traphang Trakuan.

The temple's significant ancient structures include the main stupa in the Lanna style.

The large sanctuary at the front houses a stucco Buddha statue in the attitude of subduing Mara. To the south, there is a small stupa in a Srivijayan-Lankan style. There are also four alcoves with Buddha statues facing the four cardinal directions. In front, there is a small island in the middle of the water where a small ordination hall is located.

Our final stop before lunch was at the front of the park, where we paid our respects at the statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great. The statue is made of bronze and blackened copper, and is twice the size of the real king, standing at 3 meters tall. He sits with his feet hanging over the edge of a stone throne, his right hand holding a scripture, and his left hand in a gesture of teaching the people. On the left side of the throne is a tray with a sword placed beside it. The king's face resembles that of a Sukhothai Buddha statue from the early period, conveying a sense of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great's merciful, just, and decisive nature. On the side, there are images of inscribed tablets depicting events related to his royal deeds, as mentioned in the Sukhothai inscription.

Taking Your Partner to Sukhothai Noodles

For lunch, we plan to have Sukhothai noodles, a famous dish of Sukhothai province, at "Ta Pui Restaurant", the first Sukhothai noodle shop in Sukhothai. It is located on Charat Withithong Road, opposite the PTT gas station, before Khlong Phoi intersection. If you are coming from the park, make a U-turn in front of the gas station. It is about 11 kilometers from the park and takes about 15 minutes to get there.

Parking is available at the back of the shop.

The restaurant offered both air-conditioned and fan-cooled seating options. We had lunch at nearly three in the afternoon, so there were not many customers and we didn't have to wait long.

We ordered Sukhothai Tom Yum noodle soup with thin rice noodles and all the toppings. Taklom ordered dry thin rice noodles without vegetables and sprinkled with crispy fried wontons.

Ours has a lot of ingredients and a very strong flavor. The round-eyed one is also delicious and she likes it very much.

Deep-fried wontons with sweet chili sauce are a perfect match.

Take your partner on a getaway to Le Charme Sukhothai Resort.

After lunch, we drove back to check in to our accommodation for the second night. We stayed at Le Charme Sukhothai Resort, a contemporary Thai-style resort surrounded by a refreshing pool and lush trees. It is located near Sukhothai Historical Park.

Our Deluxe room is located in the poolside zone and features a balcony that extends outwards. The room is very spacious.

There are two beds in total: a small bed for one person and a large bed for two people.

The outdoor balcony features a table and chairs, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the view of the pool.

Amenities are also fully equipped, especially hairdryers, which are essential for women.

The bathroom here is very spacious, and the large glass windows make it feel even more open and airy. The wet and dry areas are also well separated.

Take your partner to see Sangkhalok ceramics

After taking a break from the afternoon sun and napping in an air-conditioned room, we continued our journey to the Sukhothai Sangkhalok (Ganesha Ceramic Gallery), a learning center for Sangkhalok ceramics located behind the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.

In addition to producing Sangkhalok ceramics, a heritage of wisdom passed down since the Sukhothai period for trade and export, the center also offers workshops teaching Sangkhalok pattern writing to those interested. The center provides all necessary equipment and instruction on pattern writing. Participants simply need to leave their address, and the center will fire their work and deliver it to their home for a fee of 250 baht, including delivery.

After exploring the area, I came across this piece, which is the most realistic sculpture I have ever seen.

Take your significant other to watch the sunset at Tha Din Daeng Reservoir.

Originally, we planned to visit Wat Valukaram and the ancient wooden houses community in Khiri Mas district in the afternoon of the second day. However, we were exhausted from the sun at the national park in the morning and afternoon, so we had to change our plan to Su Thep Sangkalok instead.

However, we still had one more destination in mind, which we initially planned to visit on our way back from Khiri Mas district. This was the "Tha Din Daeng Reservoir," a reservoir located within Ramkhamhaeng National Park. We stumbled upon this location by chance while searching for directions to Khiri Mas district on Google Maps.

Utilizing Street View mode to explore the area surrounding the reservoir from real images, we discovered that this location is quite intriguing. A road runs along the crest of the dam, allowing vehicles to ascend and park for scenic views.

The front view is a large reservoir with a backdrop of mountains, while the back view is a rice field as far as the eye can see. The atmosphere is very good.

This location is approximately 25 kilometers from Sukhothai Historical Park. Drive straight along Rural Road 1272, turn onto Road 3049, and continue straight ahead to reach the reservoir. For convenience, open Google Maps and follow the directions to avoid getting lost. The road is excellent, and the scenery is breathtaking. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

It is recommended to arrive here around 5 pm to catch the sunset. It's romantic, and you should definitely bring your partner.

As dusk approaches, it is advisable to expedite your departure due to the darkness and relative isolation of the nighttime route.

Taking Your Partner on a Temple Fair Stroll

After returning from the reservoir, we drove around until we reached the city center. We passed Wat Ratchadhani and saw many shops set up along the temple wall, so we found a parking spot and stopped by to walk around.

A small merit-making ceremony is being held at the temple to renovate the prayer hall.

The amusement park rides and games brought joy to the children, and we both thoroughly enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the temple fair.

After a long walk, we were famished and decided to drive back to the resort for dinner. The restaurant for the evening meal was a balcony extending out over the water, with a colorful fountain in the center of the pool.

We ordered a total of four dishes: pork belly toast, creamy tom yum soup with prawns, stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts, and three-flavored sea bass. Initially, we thought four dishes would be just right, not too much for two people to finish. However, each dish was surprisingly large. We felt that the portions were more than worth the price we paid, and everything was delicious, especially the pork belly toast. Since we had already ordered it, we decided to eat until our stomachs were full.

Overall, the atmosphere is very pleasant. It is shady, quiet, and private. This is another resort that I recommend you visit.

Embark on a pilgrimage with your beloved to pay homage to the revered Phra Achana at the sacred Wat Si Chum.

After checking out of our accommodation, we headed to Wat Si Chum, a must-visit temple in Sukhothai Province.

It houses a large Buddha statue in the Mara-Vijaya posture, known as "Phra Achana".

It is believed that the Phra Achana Buddha statue was built during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng. This is mentioned in the first inscription of Sukhothai, which states: "At the foot of the city of Sukhothai... there is a Phra Achana, with a castle." Therefore, the principal Buddha statue in the mandapa is named "Phra Achana."

"Phra Achana" is a term derived from the Pali word "Achala," which means "unwavering," "steadfast," and "worthy of respect and worship."

Another tale associated with Wat Sri Chum is the "Talking Buddha," where "Buddha" refers not to a monk but to the temple's revered Buddha statue, Phra Achana.

The story originates from the reign of King Naresuan the Great. During his campaign to quell a rebellion in Sukhothai, a ceremony was held at Wat Si Chum to swear allegiance to the king. However, the soldiers were demoralized as they were fighting against their own people. To boost their morale, King Naresuan devised a plan. Another interesting aspect of Wat Si Chum is that it is the location where the second inscription was discovered. This inscription discusses the history of the Phra Ruang and Pha Mueang dynasties, as well as the founding of Sukhothai. After visiting Wat Si Chum, we headed to Thung Saliam district, a small district located about 50 kilometers north of Sukhothai Historical Park. It took about an hour to drive. The road was lined with trees and green rice fields, which were refreshing and pleasing to the eye.

Before reaching Thung Saliam district, we noticed a large green rice field by the roadside. We decided to turn into an unfamiliar road to find a spot for taking pictures. We drove until we came to a point where there was a road in the middle, with vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye could see on both sides.

The group stopped the car to take photos and enjoy the scenery for a while.

Taking Your Partner for a Mortar-and-Pestle Som Tum Feast

Continuing on for a while, we arrived at Thung Saliam district. We stopped for lunch at Som Tam Yawk Krok restaurant.

This som tam restaurant boasts a unique and captivating decor, achieved through the artful arrangement of antique household items, meticulously collected by the owner. These carefully curated pieces adorn the space, creating an ambiance that seamlessly blends the charm of the past with the present.

At the entrance, there is a unique menu made of wood.

The interior features approximately five seating sets, each accommodating 5-10 individuals depending on table size. Despite the scorching outdoor heat, the restaurant's interior maintains a comfortable and cool temperature.

The shop is open from 10 am to 3 pm.

Every dish was incredibly delicious, making the long journey worthwhile.

Take your girlfriend to pay respects to Luang Pho Sila

The next destination is "Wat Tung Saliam", the location of "Luang Pho Sila", a seated Buddha statue in the Naga style made of gray sandstone. It combines Sukhothai and Lopburi art styles. Originally, Luang Pho Sila was located inside the Tham Chao Ram cave, but it was later moved to Wat Tung Saliam. However, on October 29, 1977, Luang Pho Sila was stolen from the temple.

Seventeen years later, it was discovered that Luang Pho Sila was being auctioned in England. Upon learning this, the villagers contacted government agencies to track down the statue. However, by the time they reached England, Luang Pho Sila had already been auctioned and moved to the United States. The lawyer for the auction winner claimed to be unaware that the statue had been stolen and agreed to return it, but demanded compensation of approximately two hundred thousand US dollars, or around 5,200,000 baht. Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, Chairman of the Charoen Pokphand Group, and Mr. Wallap Chearavanont, Executive Director, became the main sponsors to support the compensation, allowing Luang Pho Sila to return to Wat Tung Slieum, Tung Slieum District, Sukhothai Province on December 19, 1996.

About 7 kilometers from Thung Saliam district, you will find "Baan Hom Klin Din", a trendy coffee shop located in the middle of a rice field.

The restaurant's decor blends European and modern loft styles.

The building offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The indoor area features a windmill on the roof, while the outdoor area surrounds the building. However, the outdoor area can be quite hot in the afternoon due to direct sunlight.

After enjoying a relaxing break, they continued their journey to Sukhothai Airport, their final destination, which was approximately 36 kilometers away and took about 45 minutes to reach. Upon arrival, they returned the rental car at the designated point and proceeded to the departure terminal with their luggage to check in.

On the return trip, we chose flight PG 214, departing at 18:45. This flight had a great schedule, allowing us to enjoy our last day to the fullest without returning too early or arriving too late.

After checking in, I had some time to spare, so I went for a walk around the airport.

Upon arrival, a tram will be waiting to pick you up at the front entrance and take you to your boarding gate. This experience evokes memories of riding the tram to university during my college days.
